Student as Global Citizen

Student as Global Citizen

The United World Schools Organization defines global citizens as students (and educators) who:  are aware of the wider world, have a sense of their role as a world citizen, respect and value diversity, want to tackle social justice, believe that all children and young people have a right to an
education.  Preschool is the perfect time to introduce the concept of global
citizen to young children if we want this world to be a better place. How can
we begin to teach children about the world around them - not just their own
community - but their ENTIRE WORLD?

One way to begin to teach young students about the diversity of people and
places in our world is through the Flat Stanley project.  You can find out more
about the Flat Stanley project here - Flatstanleyproject.com

To begin, the teacher will read the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown.   In this
story, a bulletin board that hangs over Stanley’s bed falls on top of
him and makes him flat.  He flattens to ½ inch thick. Stanley’s
adventures allow him to slip under doors, be flown like a kite, and to
be mailed to his friend’s house in California.
The next step is for each student to color their own Flat Stanley
character (a template can be downloaded at flatstanley.com or you
can make your own).  Students are encouraged to write a story (with
parent or teacher help) about him including where he is from, his
interests, his daily routines, and then mail it to a friend from a
different school, a family member in a different state or country or
anyone else they can think of.   You can actually sign up on
flatstanley.com to participate with other classrooms around the
world. The person receiving the Flat Stanley is asked to take a
picture with Flat Stanley and send a letter back about his adventures.
The student then shares the letter and photo with the class.

You can keep track of Flat Stanley's adventures on a world map hung up in the classroom.

Reflection:  The Flat Stanley project is a great way to begin to introduce young children to the idea of
being a global citizen.  A lot of young children have never left their own neighborhoods and this project can help them to appreciate the rich and diverse cultures, people, and places in our world.  I am excited to start using this project in my classroom.  Students will be eager to learn more about the places Flat Stanley travels to as well as the customs of the people that live there.  It will be a great adventure for us all!
