Students as Scribes
STUDENTS AS SCRIBES
Scribing in an early childhood classroom looks much different than in any other
classroom. Students in an early childhood classroom are often just learning the
correct way to hold a writing utensil and their actual writing usually consists of
random marks and scribbles. Teachers in early childhood classrooms often scribe
for their students.

A form of scribing that would be appropriate for preschoolers is drawing pictures
as they cannot write words and sentences on their own. Our young students often
take part in activities where they will draw a picture about a topic or question that is
given by the teacher and the teacher will then write the words that they dictate.

In many of our classes we have talked about whether having a teacher scribe for a
student is a good idea. It has been brought up that a student might not even attempt
to write if they know their teachers are always going to do it for them. Will having a teacher
scribe make a student feel like they can’t be good writers and that they shouldn’t
even try? We talked about the possibility of a teacher writing it on the back of the
student’s paper instead of on the front. Also the teacher could write the words on a
separate piece of paper that could be attached to the original. The important part is
knowing the student’s explanation of their drawing and somehow saving that
information.

I think that it would be great if students could record their own voices to describe
their pictures instead of having someone scribe for them. The App Voice
Recorder Lite: Record HD is very easy to use. All you have to do is press the red
circle button to record and the red square button to stop the recording. It will save
the recording for you and when you play it back, you have the option to change the
speed. This feature might be fun for kids to play around with. This way they can
save their dictation in their own voice and not have to depend on someone else
to write for them. I can my students being proud to share their recordings with their
classmates and teachers.
